Watercolor Painting Class
Last night I attended a two hour watercolor painting class by Art Student Academy in
downtown Wake Forest at the Wake
Forest Frame Shop.
Art Student Academy is a husband-wife artist team with a variety of class formats and
locations. Last night's class was taught by Stephen Filarsky, but Theresa also joined us during the workshop. Our
topic was Fall Color in Watercolor.
Our subject was the Linn
Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway, winding around Grandfather Mountain. All supplies
are furnished at the workshop, including brushes, paint, palettes, even water containers.
Only three of the ten of us in the class had ever tried painting with watercolors before, but every student
finished a painting by the end of the two-hour class!
Theresa took a photo of each participant. Here I am with mine- complete with a charcoal smudge or two on my
face. Hmm, my evergreen trees seem to be bending in the wind. Probably true on mile-high Grandfather Mountain!
I even liked the little abstract that emerged on the small paper that we used to try out the paints. This might
become a background for a future collage or journal page.
The session was very relaxed and friendly. I am sure I will sign up for more classes. The cost is only
$30.00 for a two-hour class. They offer instruction in acrylics and oils as well as watercolors.
Another comment about the same class
It was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to doing another one! -

About our Art Parties
Thank you sooooo much for teaching our painting night that we had with our moms group!!!
You and Steve are such talented artists and we were honored to have you come and show us how to paint the garden
landscape painting we chose for our group.
We LOVED all the paintings and were amazed how wonderful they all turned out although our experience level
varied so much. You are both extremely patient and wonderful at explaining things in to simple terms that isn’t
intimidating for beginner painters.
Can’t wait to do it again!! Thanks again, Christine
I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you again for a really fun and different mom's night out. It was a
great time and can't believe how well my painting turned out. It's been years since I've done any painting; the
instruction was so easy to follow and you were so patient as we went step by step through the painting.
Thanks again :)
Melissa
Thank you for offering this Art Party for our 4H group! Not only did we raise a lot of money but everyone had a
wonderful time! Their paintings were amazing. We will plan to do this again in the fall!

What did one parent say? Dad, sipping coffee during a break, came with daughter and said "This is really
nice. It's the most relaxed I've been all month!"
We really liked the idea of starting and finishing a painting in one sitting. Picture came out great! Had a
wonderful time!

Thank you for offfering these classes at such an affordable price! With 3 artsy children in my family, it
makes a big difference! But it's not that so much as how enthusiastic they are when they leave one of your
workshops. We love that concept as well!

About our workshops:
I really enjoyed the class Saturday. It felt really great to leave with something to show. In fact I have shown
my german shepard everywhere today.I plan on signing up for your husband's class in August. I can't wait. Tell him
that he has some awful big shoes to fill.LOL I can't wait to take another portrait class whether it was animals or
people. I'm sure you could shine a bright light in either direction. Both would be great!!!!!! It was SO worth
it!
Thanks Again for your time and effort - Annette
Thank you so much for the delightful lesson on painting dogs. I just loved it and I would come to another one
even if it is the same. That was so much fun. Today I started painting our other Yorkie. He has a short hair
cut so that may be different but I'm ready to play. I had my husband help me get an outside photo of him this
morning without the flash and I watched your DVD to remind me of all your great tips. I love your DVD. Great
information and you did not move too fast. It was perfect. I only hope I can learn to paint with more
confidence and success. I really need a class in mixing paint colors. I think that would be very helpful. Thank
you again. What fun!

"Steve’s relaxed style makes taking the class a real joy. His attention to detail in setting a
creative environment fosters inspiration. He is a hands-on teacher giving one-on-one attention when it is
needed. He gives kind direction and suggestions to experienced painters and is exceptionally patient with new
artists. Whether you have painted for years or are a new painter, you will enjoy his technique and his approach
to painting."

I just want to share my personal thoughts on the Plein Air workshop sponsored by
the Aiken Center for the Arts over the weekend. AAG members Dot, Marge, Tammy and I (and several members of the
North Augusta Artist Guild) took this two-day workshop, and I think it was one of the more productive classes
I've attended. The instructor was very laid-back, with a light-hearted sense of humor, and very informative. I
think he helped at all levels of expertise, and there were all levels in attendance. We produced two paintings
each. We gathered in the little park area in front of Lionel Smith, Ltd, on Laurens Street, and Steve did a
demonstration. We then all agreed to go to the parkway in front of the West Side Bowery on Park Avenue, where
we each chose our subject to paint.
Hope you will do it again.
Bren
I have spent a lot of money at other workshops and I cannot believe what I turned out in yours in just two
hours. I LOVE what I did with the dog painting! Thank you for encouraging me to experiment!
